J’ai raté ma carrière

Un de mes coachés me tenait dernièrement ce discours. Il a une cinquantaine d’années, une belle carrière (= pas trop de soubresauts) derrière lui et il a raté l’année dernière le poste de responsable de la filiale dans laquelle il travaille. Depuis, il collabore avec son boss, mais il se sent mis de côté et, pire, déconsidéré auprès de ses collègues. Il traîne ce sentiment maintenant avec lui et comprend qu’il entre dans une spirale négative.

Une fois sorti les mouchoirs pour compatir avec lui, il y a trois aspects à considérer.

Le premier est que dans la vie en entreprise, et plus largement dans la vie en société, il y a des facteurs que nous maîtrisons et d’autres non. Est-il (en partie) responsable de cette situation ou y-a-t-il des facteurs de risques indépendants de sa volonté ? Comment peut-on se sentir coupable de facteurs qui nous échappent ? C’est peut-être la première fois qu’il rate un objectif. Il regarde le côté vide de son verre, mais il a aussi toujours son travail et à priori son salaire n’a pas baissé. Au lieu de pleurer sur lui-même (ce qui doit dans les faits accentuer la spirale négative), il lui faut se reconstruire une approche positive de sa situation en prenant conscience de cette dimension et en se mettant en situation proactive. Si les autres ne viennent plus spontanément à vous, allez vers eux. Ce sont de tels petits pas qui le remettront dans le circuit.

Le deuxième aspect est qu’il a misé peut-être toute sa carrière sur l’ascension au sommet. Est-il vraiment fait pour cela ? Nous pouvons toujours imaginer être le meilleur sportif, le meilleur danseur, le meilleur joueur de poker, mais, quels que soient nos efforts, la réalité nous rattrape. Il est peut-être un super fonctionnel, mais pas un patron. Si cela est plutôt vrai, comment l’aider à trouver une voie ad hoc ? Si il a le talent pour être le boss, comment faire que le train passe une seconde fois ? Nous confondons souvent « passion » (= avoir le goût de) et « compétences » (avoir la capacité à »), sans compter qu’il y a, dans toute vie sociale, une part du hasard et d’opportunités. La philosophie chinoise exprime bien cela en affirmant que c’est le chemin et non l’arrivée qui sert d’étalon au sentiment de succès (ou d’insuccès). Il y a peu de gens qui ont (eu) des carrières linéaires aujourd’hui. Les chasseurs de tête le savent et ils mesurent la capacité de résilience.

Le troisième et dernier aspect es qu’il a encore 10 / 15 ans de carrière devant lui. Est-ce vraiment être un patron sa destinée ? S’il avait eu le poste, l’aurait-il considéré comme son ultime étape ou une marche intermédiaire vers de nouveaux sommets ? Même si cela a été son credo pendant des décennies, est-ce toujours d’actualité ? Parfois nous courrons après des buts, mais une fois atteints nous réalisons que cela faisait un moment que nous n’en avions plus envie. Il lui faut, à ce stade, s’interroger sur son véritable objectif ici et maintenant et sur ses intentions pour les années à venir. Peut-être que ce poste actuel lui procurera des loisirs pour construire le futur. En chinois, c’est le même idéogramme pour « crise » et « opportunité ». Que cherche-t-il ? Le pouvoir ? Le titre ? L’argent ? La reconnaissance ? Chacun d’entre eux peut s’obtenir par d’autres moyens.
