Votre travail fait-il partie d’une espèce en voie de disparition ? Quels seront les métiers (ou les services) qui seront à l’honneur demain ? Comment être dans la bonne tendance ? Dans la lignée des travaux de Richard Florida (sur la « creative class »), Andy Kessler propose une classification qui, pour caricaturale qu’elle soit, interpelle.

Oubliez la notion de cols bleus et de cols blancs ! Il y a maintenant deux catégories : les créatifs et les serviteurs. Les créatifs sont ceux qui créent de la valeur ajoutée sous quelle que soit leur forme : des concepteurs de produits pharmaceutiques, des ingénieurs spécialisés dans les outils de recherche ou de puces électroniques, des inventeurs de nouveaux usages, … en bref, tous ceux qui par leur art, leur talent et leur imagination contribuent à créer de nouveaux besoins.

Et les autres ? Ce sont leurs serviteurs ! A la disposition des créateurs, ils bâtissent leurs immeubles, produisent des biens alimentaires, offrent des services juridiques ou réparent leurs véhicules. Leur plus grand risque est que la technologie « mangent » leur travail et remplace celui-ci par des ordinateurs ou des machines.

Dubitatif ? Posez-vous quelques questions :

Quand vous êtes-vous fait servir l’essence par un pompiste pour la dernière fois ?
Qui va encore à la gare pour consulter les horaires ?
Qui consulte ses droits et devoirs via un avocat sans regarder sur internet ?

Bien sûr, tous les métiers de serviteurs ne sont pas à entrer dans la même case. Je dirais même que les gardes d’enfants et de personnes âgées sont moins en danger que les juristes ou les banquiers.

Andy Kessler propose quatre catégories de serviteurs dans le domaine du service :

Les « transbahuteurs » qui déplacent les choses d’un lieu à un autre sans ajouter de valeur. Certains (comme les camionneurs) sont plus protégés que d’autres (la gestion des entrepôts est de plus en automatisée)
Les « métiers contrôlés » qui nécessitent une autorisation ou un diplôme avec un numerus clausus. Notaires, médecins, … sont des métiers qui disposent du pouvoir d’être des acteurs incontournables et de pouvoir faire payer le prix qu’ils souhaitent. Essayez d’obtenir un rendez-vous chez un ophtalmologique à moins de deux mois et vous comprendrez ce que je veux dire. La technologie les rattrape sur de nombre de plan et réduisent leur offre de service.
Les « créateurs de marge » qui savent vous vendre du vent, c’est-à-dire quelque chose que vous payez très cher pour l’image. Une montre de luxe ne donne pas une heure plus exacte qu’une montre classique, mais vous payez l’image.
Les « graisseurs » qui huilent les rouages de l’économie (notamment financière) pour que tout se passe bien. Leurs métiers (informaticiens, comptables) sont peu à peu happés par la technologie.
Les monopoliste qui ont une (quasi) exclusivité sur décision de l’Etat (chaînes de TV, opérateurs de téléphone), mais qui peuvent aussi la perdre d’un trait de plume.

Vous sentez-vous être un créateur ? Super ? Que faites-vous pour le rester dans le temps ? Faites-vous partie des serviteurs ? Observez les tendances : chaque nouvelle tendance de création de valeur secrète de nouveaux types d’emplois. A vous d’être pro-actifs pour surfer sur les vagues. Vous ne savez pas où vous situer ? L’important est d’être en cohérence avec vous-même. Trouver sa voie, c’est mettre en valeur son génie personnel, ce qui vous rend différent des autres.
